Chemical Peels

IN NORWICH

A chemical peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother. With a light or medium peel, you may need to undergo the procedure more than once to get the desired results.

Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, discoloured skin and scars — usually on the face. They can be done alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures. And they can be done at different depths, from light to deep.

IMPROVING THE APPEARANCE OF:

  • Inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne

  • Blackheads and comedones

  • Rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles

  • Enlarged pores

  • Ageing skin

  • Photo damaged skin

What Are chemical peels and how do they work?

Chemical peels are rejuvenating skin treatments designed to enhance skin texture and appearance. They work by carefully applying a specialised solution onto the skin's surface, triggering the outer layer to gently peel away. This exfoliation process uncovers a fresher, more youthful layer of skin beneath.

During a chemical peel, the solution works as an exfoliant, promoting the shedding of dead skin cells. This action prompts the skin to initiate a natural healing response, encouraging the production of new skin cells and collagen fibres. As a result, various skin concerns like fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation are visibly reduced.

Chemical peels come in different strengths, categorised as light, medium, or deep, depending on the depth of penetration into the skin.

  • Light peels are gentle and require minimal downtime, making them suitable for a quick refresh.

  • Medium peels delve deeper into the skin layers, addressing more pronounced imperfections.

  • Deep peels offer the most transformative results, effectively treating significant skin issues.

It's important to note that while deeper peels yield excellent results, they may involve a longer recovery period. Overall, chemical peels provide a tailored approach to achieving smoother, clearer, and more radiant skin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • After the first chemical peel, most people see some immediate improvement. But it's the series of treatments over a few months that really makes a big difference in how much better your skin looks. It could take up to 5 sessions with 2 to 5 weeks in between treatments to achieve the best results.

  • It is called a peel for a reason, as the chemical is used to remove the outer layer of your skin. Around three to five days later, you'll notice the skin starting to peel, much like it does after a sunburn. When you cleanse your face, it's okay to softly get rid of the flakes, but be careful not to tug or pick at the peeling skin, as this might lead to irritation and raise the chances of infection.

  • A light chemical peel will create a mild burning or tingling sensation on the skin, lasting around 3-5 minutes. This slight discomfort eases once the peel is neutralised.

With a medium-depth peel, you'll experience a stronger stinging sensation when the peel is applied. This feeling may last for about 15-20 minutes. For some patients, we can apply a numbing cream before the peel at our office. To soothe the heat, we use cold cloths at the end of the peel.

  • Potential reactions from treatment include skin redness and flushing, peeling, dryness, irritation, tightness, itching, tenderness, accentuated lines & wrinkles due to dryness, stinging and swelling.

Effects will usually typically resolve within hours and many people are able to return to their normal activities the same or the next day. Some people may react differently and may experience these reactions for longer.

However, these reactions are temporary and typically resolve within 3-7 days as the skin returns to normal.

    • The skin may peel or flake but refrain from touching, picking or pulling at any loose skin as this may compromise results.

    • The skin can be cleansed with a gentle cleanser with warm/tepid water but the use of soap should be avoided until the skin normalises. Do not scrub. Pat to dry only.

    • Avoid the use of benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid facial skin products for 2 - 3 days after the skin has healed.

    • Avoid facial products containing fragrance for 5-7 days after treatment as these may irritate the skin.

    • Avoid the use of exfoliants, further peeling agents, retinoids, retinols and vitamin A products for 5-7 days after treatment.

    • Refrain from saunas, sunbeds, steam baths and hot showers for 24 hours.

    • Avoid high-impact aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity for 24 hours after treatment.

    • Avoid intensive sun exposure, tanning booths or extreme weather conditions for a minimum of 2 weeks.

    • Use daily sunscreen protection with a minimum of 30 SPF for at least 1 week after treatment.

    • Avoid electrolysis, depilatory creams, waxing and laser hair removal for a minimum of 7 days after treatment.

    • Avoid strongly chlorinated water (swimming or cleaning) for approximately 14 days.

    • Use of an intensive moisturiser is advised for at least a week as skin may feel drier or tighter after treatment.

    • Mineral make-up can be applied once the skin has settled.

    • Any concerns should be reported to your practitioner as soon as possible.
