WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR FIRST LIP FILLER Treatment
A Guide To Your First Lip Filler Treatment
If you're thinking about getting lip fillers for the first time, you're not alone. Many of our clients here at Mel Berry Aesthetics in Norwich feel a mix of curiosity and hesitation before they book. We understand it’s not just about looks, it’s about feeling more like the person you want to be. Whether you're after a subtle enhancement or just exploring your options, we’re here to walk the journey with you.
Getting started: A Conversation not a commitment
When you visit us at our Norwich clinic, we’ll sit down for a relaxed chat, no pressure, no hard sell. It’s a space where you can ask anything, share what you’re hoping to achieve, and get a feel for what’s possible. We’ll talk through the types of dermal filler, discuss your natural features, and make sure everything feels right before we move ahead.
What the treatment feels like
The idea of needles near your lips can sound daunting, we get it. But the reality is usually much gentler than people expect. We always clean the area thoroughly first, then apply a numbing cream so you stay comfortable. Most of the fillers we use also include a mild anaesthetic, which helps even more.
The injections themselves are quick and carefully placed. I always take my time to make sure your lips stay balanced and in harmony with your face. Afterwards, we might give the area a gentle massage to shape things just right. The whole thing usually takes around 20–30 minutes
Taking care of your lips Afterwards
In the first couple of days, you’ll probably notice some swelling, maybe even a bit of bruising. That’s all part of the process. By day 7, most of this will have settled, and by two weeks you’ll be seeing the real results.
We usually suggest taking it easy after your treatment: stay hydrated, avoid intense workouts, and skip hot environments like saunas for a few days. It’s best not to wear makeup on your lips for at least 24 hours either.
If you’re ever unsure, even about something small, just reach out. It’s better to ask than to worry.
Do's:
Keep Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain the hydration of the lips.
Ice the Area: Applying a cold compress or ice pack intermittently for the first 24-48 hours can help reduce swelling.
Elevate Your Head: When sleeping or resting, keep your head elevated with pillows to prevent excessive swelling.
Follow Specific Medication Instructions: If prescribed or recommended by your practitioner, use arnica cream to help manage bruising, or take over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol to alleviate discomfort.
Observe Lip Condition: Keep an eye on the treatment area for any signs of infection or unexpected reactions and report these to your practitioner immediately.
Don'ts:
Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Refrain from high-intensity activities for at least 24-48 hours to prevent increasing blood flow to the face, which can exacerbate swelling.
Steer Clear of High Heat: Avoid hot environments like saunas, hot yoga sessions, or sunbathing for the first few days post-treatment.
Skip the Make-Up: Do not apply makeup directly on the lips for at least 24 hours to prevent infection.
Don't Massage or Touch the Area: Avoid manipulating or massaging the lips, which can alter the placement of the filler.
Avoid Certain Substances: Stay away from alcohol and blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen for 24 hours before and after the treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.
IS it safe?
Lip fillers are generally very safe when carried out by trained hands. At Mel Berry Aesthetics, we follow strict hygiene practices and use premium products that we know and trust. But we’ll always be open with you about the small risks involved and if anything ever feels off, we’re here to help straight away.
Everyone’s different - and that’s the point
Some people want just a hint of volume. Others are looking to restore shape that’s changed over time. Whatever your reason, we’ll create a plan that fits you, not a trend, not someone else’s idea of perfect.
It’s about subtle changes that help you feel good when you catch your reflection. That’s the kind of beauty we believe in.
