WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR FIRST LIP FILLER
A Guide To Your First Lip Filler Treatment
Are you considering lip fillers for the first time? It’s normal to feel a mixture of excitement and nerves, but here at Mel Berry Aesthetics, we’re dedicated to making your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. Let’s walk through what you can expect, from your initial consultation right through to the final results.
BEFORE THE TREATMENT
All dermal fillers start with a detailed consultation and lips are no exception. You’ll have a chance to sit down with one of our skilled practitioners who will not only assess the natural shape of your lips but also discuss what you're hoping to achieve. This is your opportunity to ask any questions and express any concerns you might have. We'll cover different types of fillers, helping you to understand which would best suit your desired look.
During the Procedure
Preparation: We begin by cleaning your lips and the surrounding area thoroughly to ensure a sterile environment.
Comfort: A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to minimise any discomfort during the treatment. Many of the fillers we use also contain a built-in anaesthetic, which helps make the procedure as pain-free as possible.
The Injection: The actual injecting part is quick and precise. Using a fine needle, the filler is carefully injected to achieve the right volume and contour. This part of the procedure usually lasts between 15 to 30 minutes.
Immediate Care: Immediately after the injection, we might massage the area gently. This helps to distribute the filler evenly and shapes your lips beautifully.
Aftercare and Results: Do’s & Don’ts
You might notice some swelling or bruising initially, which is perfectly normal. These effects usually subside within a few days. We’ll provide you with a set of aftercare instructions to help manage any discomfort and ensure optimal results. You should see the beautiful final results once the swelling has settled, which typically takes around two weeks.
Do's:
Keep Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain the hydration of the lips.
Ice the Area: Applying a cold compress or ice pack intermittently for the first 24-48 hours can help reduce swelling.
Elevate Your Head: When sleeping or resting, keep your head elevated with pillows to prevent excessive swelling.
Follow Specific Medication Instructions: If prescribed or recommended by your practitioner, use arnica cream to help manage bruising, or take over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol to alleviate discomfort.
Observe Lip Condition: Keep an eye on the treatment area for any signs of infection or unexpected reactions and report these to your practitioner immediately.
Don'ts:
Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Refrain from high-intensity activities for at least 24-48 hours to prevent increasing blood flow to the face, which can exacerbate swelling.
Steer Clear of High Heat: Avoid hot environments like saunas, hot yoga sessions, or sunbathing for the first few days post-treatment.
Skip the Make-Up: Do not apply makeup directly on the lips for at least 24 hours to prevent infection.
Don't Massage or Touch the Area: Avoid manipulating or massaging the lips, which can alter the placement of the filler.
Avoid Certain Substances: Stay away from alcohol and blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen for 24 hours before and after the treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.
